One Tile at a Time

Drifter Dynasty blog posts are back! First of all, I want to send out a heartfelt congratulations to the Godot Engine for continued success, most recently in the 4.4 release! I rebooted the Drifter Editor, a suite of custom tools, to leverage some of the new features Godot has rolled out. Without further ado, I present the revamped tilemap editor. Let’s kick this off with a rebuild of the opening environment, the Grandline Saloon!
Tilemap Editor Basic Interface
The tilemap editor now sports a more compact layout. The left shelf houses the spritesheet viewer and layers viewer with the canvas to the right. We’ll cover the meta tiles viewer later, seeing as how we’re focusing on the aesthetics at the moment. Since that’s our mission, let’s start with our first tile!
Single Tile Painting
After loading our spritesheet, we simply click on the desired tile and then paint it on the canvas. That easy! While we’re on a roll, let’s take care of the back wall.
Multi Tile Painting
Next is the floor, but we’ll simply paint the perimeter because we’ve got the bucket fill to show off.
With a single click and the bucket fill activated, we can paint an entire area of similar tiles.
Now that I think of it, perhaps the saloon should be a tad bigger. After selecting a group of tiles, I’ll cut and paste the bottom to achieve this extension.
Copy and paste is also an option. Let’s fill in the gap that way!
There seems to be more of our spritesheet out of frame, so we’ll just zoom out a bit.
Filtered Tile Groups
Much better! Now that we can see more of our wall tiles, let’s create a filter to further organize our tiles.
Now we’ll tab over to see our filtered tiles.
Upon inspection, that painting would look awfully nice!
This is a great start for our saloon! There’s plenty of room to work with, so we’ll wrap up today’s blog post by creating a launch pad for the next post.
After adding a new layer, I renamed the existing ones to contextualize them beyond the spritesheets they source. By painting a simple rug, I welcome you to stay tuned for the rest of the saloon’s interior design and creation!
